Re: Music Music Music
As I mentioned on the Movie thread, Edgar Wright featured this song in Scott Pilgrim, and it's got me relistening to The Bluetones, which was a fun little britpop band. I always felt the verses and chorus were brought together from different ideas, because the verses is all emotive and sad while the...

Scott Pilgrim vs The World A film targeted to the me demographic. Example: I don't think I'd ever hear a The Bluetones song in a 70 million dollar budget film, and I don't think we'll ever get to again. Also we may never get Brie Lawson kicking butt in a tiny role ever again, unless you count her t...

Well that was me watching this film. So I can't give it a thumbs up or thumbs down, oth...

Lady Gaga being gaga over Fiona Apple led back to "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" which I left for a bit during the recent civil rights movement but relistening a much of it is expressing anger and self-advocating. The lyrics and emotion are two thirds of it, the last third is the wonderful music...

Re: Trump
It's weird hearing about something recent in America, and go "woah that's straight up Nazi shit" and then read further that, well this was was legal in America until the 1970s (forced hysterectomies). I guess it's all a range of white supremacy, which Germany took to its largest level yet ...

Re: Movie Review Thread
Gold Diggers of 1933 Fabulous! This film changes its focus three or four times, and it was a joy to follow each move. It's a Busby Berkley high-status musical that doesn't pretend that it's not deep in the Great Depression. It can be silly, ogling, campy and a bit feminist (the women have all the f...

52 By Women 2020 #74: Merrily We Go to Hell This took me the opposite of "Dance Girl Dance", which took a while to get moving but by the end had me hooked. This film I was intrigued in the first few minutes, but the story, the twists and turns, didn't really excite me at all. But like the...

52 By Women 2020 #72: The Gleaners and I Satisfies two things you want from a good documentary: being well made (having Varda at the lead, with her artistic and personal touch) and the push for change (in this case in finding greatness in the outcasts, in recycling and reusing). Was trying to think...

Re: Republicans
Famous political leaders who are cynically gushing over Trump (Marco, Ted, Rand... Pence too) are for the most part angling for their 2024 presidential bids. It's pretty obvious. But these Never-Trumpers are also angling to 2024, because as much are honest that they want Biden to win, they will dish...

Features everything I love about modern pop, which is mainly, being as catchy-as-hell and wearing its influences heavy on its sleeves. Crisp modern production, anthemic 80s throwback (interpolating INXS) but also a 70s disco floor stomper.

Varda is the one who did a film called Nausicaa and they would not let her show it in France due to some sort of political controversy over French-Greek relations, not sure what - I searched and found this but there's not a very substantial explanation. Anyway, good stuff, I want to see some of thi...

52 By Women 2020 #71: Vagabond So am I ashamed that Agnes Varda made films for nearly 65 years, and I was alive for 38 of those years, and I didn't watch any of her films until this year, a year after her death. This is the seventh film of hers I've seen this year, and that should be enough of a rec...

52 By Women 2020 #69: La Pointe-Courte Agnes Varda's 1955 debut, a low-budget black-and-white filmed-on-location film about life and love, sets all the parameters of the French New Wave that would become the focal point of the film world four years later. And it's a beauty. From her start, Varda is...

He cannot understand selflessness because he is selfish. He cannot conceive of courage because he is a coward. He cannot feel duty because he is disloyal.
