52 By Women 2020 #53: Dance, Girl, Dance There's a tremendous scene when Marueen O'Hara, playing our hero, performs the hula, competently, artistically well, and desperately needs the success. We cut to the promoter watching, a cigar-chomping man, who does little chomping as we clearly see him bore...

Re: Democrats

Seems no matter what Republicans say about Harris, they're going to be tarred as racist. They can't ask simple questions like: Does her Jamaican and Indian parents disqualify her? Is she really American? Is she really Black? Is she ashamed of being Indian? Are her beliefs based on a Kenyan worldview...

Howard On Disney Plus, a documentary on Howard Ashman, made by the friends who loved him. A clear look at the life of one of the wittiest songwriters ever, a relatively regular by-the-numbers but often moving chronological review of his life. I get it's about his life, but I wish there was more app...

Re: Bad Feminist

Dear Bad Feminist, I've referred to Kamala Harris by her first name and have seen others in the media (public and social) doing the same. Should I start conditioning myself to call her by her last name? Should I encourage others? Or is a name that has never been a top 1000 baby name in the US, ok to...

Re: All things COVID-19

New York is back to hospital levels not seen since March 15.

Optimist me: this is great, we did it!
Pessimist me: we're back to the original "this is way too high we need to shut things down" level.

Re: Democrats

If it's Harris (big "if" but it'd be very significant if it's not), I think the last time a VP pick was this obvious was when it was Kerry/Edwards (and even Fox News was sure it was Gephardt). It's interesting that VP picks are often very dull, and it's often a cautionary tale when they ar...

52 By Women 2020 #52: Eve's Bayou  Great movie! Move over, McConaissance, Samuel L Jackson from 1989 to 1998 was an unstoppable force. I love how his character's mood/demeanor would change whenever he was interrupted by his daughters. You can see it as putting up a facade, but the evidence ...

Re: This Happened

It is! Thanks Tahlvin! Got a Google Hub I asked for today, not so much for the connectivity/ privacy invasions, but because it acts as a digital slideshow / picture frame, and as much as I've been waiting years for an electronic ink version of a digital picture frame, I gave in because this one dims...

52 By Women 2020 #49: Blue Steel I remember the cover of this film from the old video rental days. Given I had seen films similarly (star Jamie Lee Curtis' "True Lies" comes to mind, but other police procedurals) I must assume I never watched this because it was about a female cop. But it...

I Love Lucy thoughts on her 109th birthday
1. my kids (5&8) love it.
2. It's timeless, except for some gender role stuff (ewwwww).
3. Lucy's schemes are almost always bad ideas but Ricky's counter-schemes are almost always overly-cruel.
4. The theme song ups my dopamine.

Re: Movie Review Thread

Yeah, at the same time, I'd rather not a fictional character get raped in a film meant for entertainment -- but ignoring realities -- ugh. Slate did a little thing today on the folk music in Black is King, including a bit about "Mbube" https://slate.com/culture/2020/08/black-is-king-africa...

Major League Baseball has 80 cases of covid since early July.
80 cases / (30 teams * 26 players) = 10% of players.
Not a safe working environment.
