Thanks Mike. I’m out of town to attend the auction of my deceased mother-in-law’s estate, so no images this morning.

If you ever had an inkling you wanted to be in the entertainment field, now is your chance...lots of job openings.

Attending an auction of a parent's estate is not a particularly pleasant experience. Unfortunately, my brother-in-law, as executor of my mother-in-law's estate, wanted the large pieces of furniture and all the collectibles in the estate auction in order to get people to come to the auction, so the secretary my wife had an emotional attachment to and wanted to buy, she had to attend the entire auction in order to bid on it (the furniture ended up being the last stuff they sold). She spent the last month stressing about it, how much it would cost, whether she'd be able to get it, etc., that when she finally got it (for much less than we were expecting), she about broke down completely. And thankfully, we were able to fit it lying down in the back of our SUV, so there was no need to rent a U-Haul trailer to get it back home to Wisconsin from Indiana. But having to sit there and watch people bid (usually quite low!) on your mom's things? It was hard for me as the son-in-law, I can barely imagine how hard it was for my wife and her siblings.

And on top of that, they auctioned off the house and it sold for much less than they were expecting. Unfortunately, they 1) didn't have a minimum selling price, so they had to accept some sort of "bid" by the end of the auction, and 2) she still had a mortgage on it, and the estate didn't have enough cash to keep paying the mortgage for more than a couple months after paying all of the other bills, so keeping it and trying to put it up for sale through a realtor wouldn't have been practical unless it sold right away.

Had I know ahead of time, we have more than enough equity in our house, I might have taken out a line of credit, paid cash for the entire house at a price a bit higher than what it sold for, then turned around and flipped it through a realtor and made a bit of a profit. Or at the very least, I could have participated in the real estate portion of the auction and helped drive up the price for the other bidders. But honestly, I loath our home town, and the last thing I would want is to actually own a house there. So it's probably best I didn't know ahead of time...
