If hangouts doesn't work well. I have sone suggestions, to include:
Use zoom, and have one screen reserved for roll20 controlled by DM. Worked very well for us. 4th week in, and it has been so much fun. We were also aided by D&D beyond to track our character sheet, to make short and long rest easy as possible.

The firs session went pretty well. Hangouts isn't bad.
We did character creation, then did the very beginning of a dungeon.
We're going to try switching to Roll20, but at first I think we're just using it for voice and video plus die rolling. I haven't figured out mapping; I'm doing my own dungeon, and haven't figured out how to get a map of it uploaded.

WOTC is giving away some free stuff this week, including adventures, coloring pages, and Roll20 adventures.
The two Roll20 adventures are Lost Mines of Phandelver and Sunless Citadel, two decent intro level adventures. Even if you never play them, getting them dumps their assets (maps,monster stats, images) into your Roll20 account.
